I have to confess, I got this book by mistake. I picked it up on NetGalley thinking I would read it with my dog loving 10 year old, only to realize it was not a middle grade book. But the cover looked cute, and you know I’m a sucker for a nice-looking cover, especially when it has a pun for a title. Plus, I’m on vacation; it seemed appropriate.
The main character is a shy nerdy guy, who has come back home to fix the ailing family business after his father dies. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Yes, I know, we all have. Small town life, populated with charming characters, and yes, even more pun-y names. Cyrus Mills has come home to take over “Bedside Manor” the veterinary practice started by his father. You know, son leaves home to seek fortune, becomes successful, scorns his old life, then returns, tail between his legs, sort of. To be fair, this book is full of tails.
All kidding aside, this book is pure pleasure. No matter how dire the plot looks, this is the kind of book you know is going to work out in the end. It is not edgy; it is only a little bit sarcastic. Take a load off; bring this to the beach. Enjoy yourself, it’s summer.
p.s. - I did not even realize until after I read it that this book is a sequel, so obviously, it can stand on it’s own. But now I have to go back and read The Patron Saint of Lost Dogs.
